Six-point or twelve-point sockets?
Six-point sockets grip flats, not corners, and are near-impossible to round off on tight fasteners. Twelve-point engage faster and suit light work and slim access. Buy-once logic: six-point for 1/2in drive, either for 1/4in.
Metric, imperial/SAE, or both?
UK work is almost entirely metric - see our thread and bolt charts. US work genuinely needs both systems, which is why US master sets run 200+ pieces. Check the metric run goes to at least 19mm and includes 10/13/15/17 deep sockets.
What does ratchet tooth count mean?
Teeth divide the swing arc: 72 teeth = 5 degrees of handle movement to click to the next tooth, 90 teeth = 4 degrees. In an engine bay with 6 degrees of room, tooth count is the difference between working and swearing.
Are tool-truck brands (Snap-on, Mac) worth it for home users?
